The Hartford Artisans Weaving Center's mission is to enrich lives through hand-weaving.
Artisans who come to the Center routinely indicate they value equally the social and creative aspects of our program. Often they have had limited earning potential, and few opportunities for creativity, socialization, or accomplishment. Through the artisan weaving program, participants gain self-confidence by learning something new, creating quality goods, sharing their skills with others, and forming crucial social connections.
The artisan weaving program counteracts social isolation by providing artisans of all backgrounds a place to gather and share the joy of skillful craftsmanship. Artisans’ statements show this: "It gives me a purpose." "I found something I can do that I love." "I don't feel my vision loss is an impediment while I'm here.”The program is available to Greater Hartford residents who are blind, visually-impaired, or age 55 years or over. We have 34 artisans in the program, and more demand than we can accommodate. The studios are open Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and on Friday, 10 AM until 3 PM. Artisans are encouraged to attend at least twice a week, more frequently if they wish. Many weave every day we’re open.
