More Details

The Connecticut Trolley Museum is more than just a museum — it’s a living history experience for the whole family! As the proud owner and operator of the nation's oldest incorporated organization dedicated to preserving the trolley era, we’ve been delighting visitors with hands-on, interactive learning since our founding in October 1940.

Nestled on 17 scenic acres in East Windsor, right off State Route 140, our site is a treasure trove of transportation history and nostalgia. The museum is located on a 3.2-mile stretch of the original Rockville branch of the Hartford & Springfield Street Railway Company. When the organization acquired the land in 1940, it was a blank slate — no track, no power, and no buildings. Thanks to decades of hard work by passionate volunteers, we've built 1.5 miles of functioning trolley track, overhead electric wire systems, yard and storage tracks, a working power substation, multiple barns for storage, and a fully equipped restoration shop.

With over 70 pieces of vintage rail equipment, some dating back as far as 1869, the museum offers an unforgettable experience for kids and adults alike. Climb aboard beautifully restored passenger trolleys and freight cars. Explore interurban cars, elevated railway vehicles, locomotives, and service cars from around the world. Our collection includes treasures from Connecticut and far beyond — with pieces hailing from cities like Brooklyn, Boston, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Springfield, Lynchburg, Montreal, and even Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Our friendly and knowledgeable volunteers are always happy to share the fascinating stories behind each car. Whether you're taking a scenic trolley ride, checking out our kid-friendly exhibits, or watching a live restoration in progress, the Connecticut Trolley Museum is the perfect destination for curious minds of all ages.

Come ride through history with us — and create memories that will last a lifetime!
