The mission of the Malta House of Care (Malta) is to mobilize volunteers, partners, and donors to improve the overall health and well-being of uninsured adults in Greater Hartford by providing free primary care health services. Since all services are free, Malta relies on the generosity of donors and its approximately $1.65 million annual budget is 100% funded by philanthropy.
For almost 19 years, Malta House of Care, Inc. (Malta) has served as a critical healthcare safety net, providing a trusted "medical home" for comprehensive care, chronic disease management, and early diagnosis of emergent conditions. In 2024 alone, Malta clinicians provided 4,366 healthcare visits to approximately 1,200 uninsured Hartford-area residents. Our fully equipped Mobile Healthcare Clinic complements our Stationary Clinic in the Asylum Hill neighborhood of Hartford, allowing us to reach individuals who might otherwise go without care. Since our founding, we have provided more than 82,000 patient visits, all free of charge. The need for free primary healthcare for uninsured adults remains as critical today as it was when Malta began seeing patients in 2006.
• 10% of residents in Greater Hartford area adults 18-64 yrs of age are uninsured – 21% in the city of Hartford alone.
• Many are working but their jobs don’t offer health insurance, and they can’t afford it.
• Median household income in Hartford is $37,477 vs. $79,579 in Greater Hartford and $83,572 in the state of CT.
• 54% of Hartford residents are cost-burdened (spend at least 30%+ on housing costs).
• Those without insurance will put off care until there is a dire need as they are juggling the costs of food, housing, childcare, etc.
Success is measured by improved chronic disease management, increased access to preventive care, and enhanced patient well-being.
