Animal Friends of Connecticut is a non-profit cat rescue organization and shelter. We are based in New Britain CT and operate in the central Connecticut area, rescuing stray, abandoned, abused, and special needs cats in our community. Our cats are given medical care, vaccinations, are spayed or neutered and are cared for at our no-kill humane shelter or in foster homes until they are adopted into a loving forever home.
We also monitor and assist feral colonies because we know that the cats in a colony who share a common food source and territory, may include, stray, lost, or abandoned pet cats. By monitoring these colonies, it helps us to get these cats neutered, which in turn helps lessen the population of cats living outside.
Our small team of volunteers are dedicated to making a huge impact in our community. In the 2024 calendar year, our organization took in 236 cats. This included 108 adult cats, 115 kittens, and 13 trap-neuter-return cats. We also had 198 adoptions within the calendar year. Our veterinary expenses for 2024 totaled to $181,124. Theses costs are attributed to: spay &neuter costs, testing, emergency care, parasite treatments, specialist care, wound treatment, lab testing, scans, and medication.
Over the last few years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, the stray cat population in CT has exploded. Animal rescue organizations throughout the state, including AFOC, struggle to keep up with the need for animal rescue and rehoming. Our nonprofit organization depends on charitable donations and community support.
