Harlows Heroes

Our non-profit organization is dedicated to providing essential funding and support for current and retired canines who are or have faithfully served our communities. Our mission is to ensure that these remarkable animals, who have selflessly devoted their lives to protecting and serving, receive the care, love, and respect they deserve. Through our fundraising efforts, we strive to secure the necessary resources to meet the unique needs of current and retired canines. We believe that these loyal and dedicated animals have earned the right to a comfortable and fulfilling retirement, free from the hardships they may have faced during their active service. By providing financial assistance, we aim to alleviate the financial burden on their caretakers and ensure that retired canines have access to the best medical care, nutritional support, and comfortable living arrangements to include palliative care and humane euthanasia as well as essential training and protective equipment for them while they serve our communities. We understand the profound bond between these animals and their handlers, and we recognize the importance of maintaining that connection even after retirement. Our organization facilitates programs that encourage continued interaction between retired canines and their former handlers, as well as opportunities for socialization and mental stimulation. In essence, our non-profit's mission is to honor the service of current and retired canines by providing them with the care, resources, and recognition they deserve. We are committed to making a positive difference in their lives and ensuring that their retirement years are filled with comfort, love, and appreciation. Together, we can give back to these extraordinary animals who have given us so much.

More Details

Harlows Heroes is a CT Based 501(c)3 Non Profit charity that supports Retired K9 Units & K9 Teams.  The founder, Krista, organized the charity as she saw a need for resources for K9 Officers that gave their entire lives to agencies to ensure that we live a safer one.  Our main source of donations comes from private donations, donation boxes & Merchandise Sales. In addition to supporting retired K-9 units, we offer free shoots for all current and retired K9 officers and their handlers as well as raise money for essential equipment for current handlers & K9 teams and other special interests during times of need. All donations go directly to support Retired K9 units for medical care, medication, special food or equipment they might need to make sure the retirement they earned is as enjoyable as possible. Thank you so much for your consideration, it is because of you that we will be able to help more deserving K9’s.

Curious about the badge number you see everywhere?  #9532 is a number that will forever be associated with Harlows Heroes.  K9 Barrett #9532 was Montville Police’s first patrol dog.  He was the very reason we started Harlows Heroes.  In 2021 K9 Barrett apprehended a fleeing felon who was in possession of an illegal firearm. During this incident, the suspect struck K9 Barrett in the head and face multiple times.  Subsequently, K9 Barrett developed a brain bleed which led to seizures.  While they were originally optimistic that medication could clear the bleed, his family and handler was given the devastating news that the medication wasn’t working and the brain bleed had tripled in size.  Due to that, his diagnosis was then deemed fatal and he was only given weeks to live.  Since their graduation, the team had 103 successful deployments for locating narcotics, firearms, wanted suspects and missing individuals.  K9 Barrett was awarded a Medal of Bravery by the Connecticut State Police for his part in apprehending the felon back in 2021.  He was also awarded AKC's DOGNY Paw of Courage Award.  In addition, K9 Barrett was the third police working dog in the nation to be saved by Narcan.  Prior to K9 Barrett being given the fatal diagnosis, we organized Harlows Heroes with K9 Barrett being the first dog we would support, as he was "Our Police Dog". We were lucky enough to see him frequently at events, schools, camps and Farmers markets alike.  There wasn't a K9 or rather K9 team more deserving of our support and we wanted to be able to make that happen.  Now that he won’t ever be able to get to enjoy his retirement, we wanted a way to honor K9 Barrett as he is the reason other K9 units will be able to receive the support he inspired us to provide.  Barrett has inspired us and we are honored to continue his Legacy with Harlows Heroes. We will be with him and all our brave K9 units, “Till the End of Watch"

“Although his tour of duty is growing short, K9 Barrett continues to report to work, eager to serve the citizens of Montville and our neighboring communities.  Officers Witts and K9 Barrett are a team that continually acted in the highest tradition of the Connecticut State Police and the Montville Police Department.  He will be sorely missed.” -Montville Police Department

Our beloved K9 Barrett was honorably laid to rest on June 1st, 2023.
