More Details

The CT Burns Care Foundation operates The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp which offers young burn survivors ages 8 to 18 “the freedom to be a kid”. CBCF offers this camp experience free of charge to young heroes who have experienced life-altering burn injuries.  They come to us from every state, even from other countries.  Since its inception in 1978, the mission of CBCF is to help burn survivors:  most especially children with severe burn injuries who were very dear to the heart of our Founder. In 1991, The Camp was formed to address a critical need to help children recover and cope with the emotional and physical challenges that they encounter because of their tragedies.  Most are referred to us by world class children’s hospitals, including Shriners Hospital and New York Presbyterian. The Camp has been highly effective because it compassionately and non-invasively deals with the specific needs of our attendees -- coping with the psychological and physical impact of burn injuries. The camp dynamic is geared to those who often stand out and, in some cases, are bullied in their schools and communities because of their visible scarring. At camp, everyone is on an equal footing, treated with respect and encouraged to push themselves beyond perceived physical and psychological limits. Through positive reinforcement and mentoring from volunteer counselors, the dynamic of The Camp helps children learn to cope with their challenges. Our counselors are deliberately selected from the burn community:  firefighters, burn unit medical professionals, burn survivors and former campers, as they have a very good understanding of the challenges that face these children and can best serve as role models to help show them that it is possible to live productive lives despite their injuries.
