Saline Area Social Service

Our vision is a community where the most vulnerable residents have overcome daily obstacles and achieved their fullest potential.

Our mission is to provide support for members of our community during their times of need. We are neighbors helping neighbors.

We serve low income families and individuals living within the Saline Area School District who are the most vulnerable and often forgotten: children, the working poor, the disabled and the elderly. Our organization has provided weekly assistance to over 440 people over the last year. Children represent 36% of the people we serve. Of the adults who come through our doors, 43% are working at part time and/or low paying jobs, 24% are disabled and 22% are seniors living on meager fixed incomes.  Unfortunately, many are in situations that are not going to change.

More Details

Saline Area Social Service (SASS) was founded 60 years ago in 1961 by a community resident, Marian Hering, to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to those in need in the Saline community. She kept the supplies in her basement. What started as a holiday meal program has grown into today’s full-service community assistance center providing regular supplies of groceries and household necessities, financial assistance for other emergency needs such as rent and utility bill support and car repairs, services for needy children including back-to-school necessities and winter clothes, and the wherewithal for children in financially insecure families to receive mental health, tutoring services, and to take part in enrichment activities.
